Small quarto. 36pp + 20pp. of samples. The third publication from the creative team of Barbara Hodgson and Claudia Cohen narrows its focus to patterned textiles produced between 1800 and 1825 in two regions in France: Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles, and Alsace. Specifically, the book examines the painted designs for these textiles, which were done in gouache on paper, then gathered into pattern books. Hodgson and Cohen collaborated with textile historian Susan Meller, who contributes an essay on the history of these designs, and whose collection of these gouache designs contributed to the roughly 90 samples included in the book. Hodgson's essay discusses the pigments and dyes used to transmit the designs to the cotton fabrics. Includes a suite of seventeen textile samples and dye samples. Another informative, tasteful exploration of material culture, bound by Cohen in gilt-decorated blue morocco-backed pastepaper boards, fore-edges trimmed in morocco. Housed in a cloth folding case with pastepaper edging.
