Folio portfolio. (48) pp. "This is a Bibliography of Papermaking and Watermarking from 1390 to 1800 and is the first compilation of the kind ever undertaken." In order to prevent speculators from purchasing this book, Hunter refused to sell more than one copy to any one address. "This splendid book was intensified by the addition of 22 black and white illustrations printed in the text, 22 facsimiles of old title-pages printed on paper similar to the originals, including two on paper made at Marlborough, and two photos." While putting together this work, Hunter suffered a hemorrhage in his left eye, which resulted in a two-month hospital stay. Hunter later remarked in correspondence with a collector that the hemorrhage left him sightless and unable to complete "any further work of such close nature." The present work, then, he noted, "will be the last book that I will ever make myself." Unbound, as issued, in half linen and paste paper portfolio with ties .Typical wrinkling to several leaves resulting from glue shrinkage; light foxing and a few stray marks to boards. Overall, a nearly fine copy.
