John Eliot, a Puritan minister in Roxbury, Massachusetts, was known as the "Apostle to the Indians." He learned the language of the Algonquian Indians so that he could preach to the local tribes, and his translation of the Bible into the Natick dialect was published in Cambridge in 1663. According to the Massachusetts Historical Society, it was the largest single printing project of the Colonial era. The accompanying essay by John Alden explores the translation's origins.
