Royal octavo. x, (140)pp. With a Foreword by Oliver Simon. Part type specimen, part technical guide, part leaf book, this work takes up where Curwen's Specimen Book of Types & Ornaments, published in 1928, left off. It adds type faces, initial letters, ornaments and borders acquired by the Press in the years since the earlier book's publication - including a sans-serif designed by Harold Curwen. Also included are texts on printing wood engravings by Curwen, one by Paul Nash on the stencil process, which the press used to great effect throughout its distinctive oeuvre, and a descriptive note on Curwen's music-punches followed by a sample of Curwen's music printing. The catalogue raisonné is interspersed with a selection of samples from the Press's printed works. As comprehensive as it is aesthetically pleasing, this copy retains the publisher's buff cloth binding printed in blue and red, which shows light toning - especially along spine; top edge a trifle dusty. Near fine overall, housed in a cloth folding case.
