Small quarto. (vi) (12) pp. + 24 plates. From an edition of 240, this is one of 100 copies printed on Flower paper made for the Kelmscott Press, bound in half Oasis leather, and with an accompanying portfolio of proof engravings and one additional color engraving. These engravings by Lucien Pissarro were mainly done for Eragny Press publications, and they have been printed here from the original blocks lent by the Ashmolean Museum. In his Introduction, John Bidwell recounts the evolution of Pissarro's paper selection for his Eragny books - noting, in particular, that Charles Ricketts had strongly recommended he use Batchelor paper. Pissarro would ultimately select Arches, which Bidwell observes "is noticeably thicker, rougher in texture, and harder to handle" - qualities which "would seem less suitable for printing wood-engraved illustrations." This book allows us to see what Pissarro's engravings would look like had he heeded Ricketts's advice. Each issue of the edition utilizes a variety of Batchelor paper made to William Morris's standards, most of which was donated to the project by the Morgan Library. Without the interference of the more prominent chain lines, Pissarro's engravings appear decidedly sharper, allowing smaller details to come into greater focus. This work is an elegant pondering of what could have been. Spine sunned, else near fine.
