19ff. loose, as issued, + (16)pp. booklet. One of 150 copies. This set of seventeen wood engravings showcases the scenery and people of Dorset, England, where Reynolds Stone lived and worked. In the densely detailed images, quaint buildings rise out of forested landscapes and content villagers laze in the foreground reading books and interacting with the natural setting. The engravings were hand-printed by Stone on an 1853 Albion press, each signed and numbered by him and mounted in a bevelled window-mount. His house in Litton Cheney, an "old rectory" bordered by a stream, provided the inspiration for the bucolic world depicted in the illustrations, as well as for the accompanying poem by Rev. F.T. Colby, a previous resident of the rectory. The poem was printed by The Compton Press in an edition of 500 copies, this being one of 150 signed and numbered by Stone and reserved for purchasers of the wood engravings. The booklet was originally issued to coincide with the exhibition of "The Old Rectory" engravings at the Royal College of Art in 1976. Engravings and booklet in fine condition; all are housed in a cloth drop-back box, which shows very minor shelfwear and is faded at the spine.
