Small quarto. (8)ff. Josef Herman's lithographs gathered as a suite and intended to illustrate the Golden Cockerel Press's final book. The book was never published and the lithographs languished until their discovery some twenty years later. Printed in blue and black, the illustrations are a departure from the style commonly adopted in Golden Cockerel publications. They revel in the passions and playfulness of Catullus' work, while still maintaining the poet's longing and loneliness with due subtlety. Herman was born in a Warsaw Jewish community in 1911, escaping to Britain in 1938 and thence becoming one of Britain's most celebrated artists of the latter half of the twentieth century. Faint rubbing to some corners, as expected, else a fine and highly prized suite.
