Quarto. vii, 119pp. First edition of this translation by William Morris and A.J. Wyatt. The poem called by Morris "the first and best poem of the English race; no author but the people," tells of the hero Beowulf's battles with the monster Grendel, his more monstrous mother, and the dragon Fafnir. The text is preceded by the argument, and followed by a list of names and a glossary. Printed in Troy type with titles in red, with Morris' decorated initials and leaf and vine borders throughout. The title opening, with the first text page facing, is densely printed with foliate borders and backgrounds. With "Note to the Reader" slip laid in. A fine copy in limp vellum, with the silk ties intact. Housed in a cloth slipcase. (Peterson A32)
