Two quarto volumes. xiv, 36, 26 pp.; (v), 92 pp. In 1865 William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones began work on an edition of Cupid and Psyche. Although they did not finish the project for want of an appropriate typeface, Burne-Jones had completed 50 drawings for the book, and Morris cut the blocks for at least thirty-eight of them. The existence of these woodblocks was brought to the attention of Will and Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press by Colin Franklin, and they decided to print an edition using Morris's Troy type, which was made available by Brooke Crutchley. The current edition, which is as close as one can hope to get to the original intent of Morris and Burne-Jones, is the result. Volume I is a monograph by A.R. Dufty, secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of London, owners of the original wood blocks, with plates of Burne-Jones's preparatory drawings. Volume II contains the text of Cupid and Psyche printed in Morris's Troy type, with illustrations from the original blocks, printed on J. Barcham Green mould-made paper. This stunning production from a highly regarded press is bound in boards covered with blue and white paper in Morris's willow pattern, backed in blue cloth, and housed in a blue cloth slipcase. Very light rubbing to cloth slipcase, else fine.
