Folio. (50)pp. Gunnar Kaldewey, quite fittingly, illustrates Thoreau's musings of time, friendship, death, and wine with impressions from old barn boards from his printshop in Poestenkill. The boards date from the 1850s, Thoreau's own time, an affinity which the empathetic and ecstatic Transcendentalist would no doubt have appreciated, not least for Kaldewey's evocation of nature's endurance whether on page or in forest. The deluxe edition is bound in one of the actual barn boards, which has been shaved and cut to suit. Pages bound in with brass rivets to ebony mount. Fine. Housed in gray chemise and slipcase, the spine of the former rather sunned. (Von Lucius 38)
