Quarto. (46)pp. A multimedia meditation on gold, in all its material, semiotic, and lyrical meanings, the book is letterpress printed in myriad typefaces and is otherwise embossed and ornamented entirely in gold on gold paper. The result is a shimmering follow-up to the Officina Ludi's other color projects - a white book and a black book - with contributions from eleven illustrators, each of whom has latched on to an evocative sense of gold. There are gold coins, a golden calf, a spread from the Koran, the Golden Mean as writ on the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man, Lorelei's golden hair, Goethe's golden mirror, Poe's golden scarab, and a spate of other images and texts charting the course of the term's iconography. An array of techniques add to the dazzling experience, including a foil application that prints UV relief varnish and gold foil in a single step. Bound in gold metallic wrappers with incised titling. The extra suite of prints has four images that do not appear in the book proper, and are held in a gold paper folio. All housed in slipcase covered in gold silk. Accompanied by gold gloves. Minimal rubs to corners, streak of green to foot of slipcase, else near fine. Certainly the gold standard.
