Stone lithograph on paper measuring 13 3/16 by 9 7/16 inches. In a letter to the print curator at the Corcoran Gallery cited by Dan Burne-Jones, Kent explains that this print "aims to call attention to the decay of the structure of democracy that threatens while the citizen sleeps." The work is known by both titles, which Kent appears to have written indiscriminately across the edition (Burne-Jones call those bearing "Wake Up America!" - as here - a variant). Burne-Jones further speculates that this print, along with several others Kent produced during this period with socially piquant themes, were created in response to the rising tide of authoritarianism in the U.S. since the 1930s. A poignant message that rings loud and clear eight decades later. Fine and bright. (Burne-Jones 136).
