Chiaroscuro wood engraving on paper printed in black and bluish gray; image measures 8 1/2 by 6 3/8 inches. Kent depicts a mother carrying a child on her shoulder while moving barefoot through a sparsely vegetated landscape in the dark. The only source of light is a glow off in the lower right margin, which, given the mother's direction and backward glance, appears to be the thing from which she is fleeing. The movement inherent in the image, together with the title and year it was created, strongly suggest that this is Kent's statement on the plight of wartime refugees. A fine, bright example.
