Gellert was a staunch communist, and his work first appeared in the radical publications of America and his native Hungary, though eventually made their way to a wider audience through The New Yorker and The New York Times. Still, Gellert was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He refused to answer most of the Committee's questions and though he was not punished directly was, nevertheless, very much monitored by the FBI for decades.
