Quarto. 88, (4)pp. Illustrated throughout with a border showing a mask above a seascape, the latter including Ediciones El Fortín's emblematic lighthouse. The half title features a cut paper collage, and the full title bears a sample of colorful fabric. Montes has here compiled the poems of Cuba's most celebrated women poets, including Fina García Marruz, Nancy Morejon, Ruth Behar, Odette Alonso, Carilda Oliver Labra, Digdora Alonso, and Montes herself. The result is a monument to the particular complexities of womanhood in the machismo culture pervasive on the island, the joys of domesticity and art and work, and the political activism which binds together community, regardless of gender. Ediciones El Fortín has issued smaller editions than its peers on the island, often with a greater degree of material, aesthetic, and conceptual experimentation. These are on full display here: the book is bound in blue paper wrappers covered in layers of mesh, plush silver textile, strips of painted wood, netting, and yarn. Set upon the whole is a ceramic mask by Edel Arencibia. All bindings for the edition are variant. Attached to the yarn is a dried frond bookmark. Quite the material and poetic achievement, with only the usual wear expected of the given substrates. Near fine. Housed in decorated paper bag with twine handles.
