The leaf is from a copy of Volume I of the Sweynheym and Pannartz first edition of Nicholas of Lyra's Postilla super totam bibliam, completed on 18 November 1471 in the Palazzo Massimo in Rome—only 239 of 452 leaves of that copy remain. The leaf bears a two-line rubricated initial on the recto. Sweynheim and Pannartz, the earliest printers outside Germany, worked at Subiaco and Rome, making Humanist and classical texts available to a wider audience. Since their press runs were normally only 275 copies, their editions are now seldom seen and costly. This is a rare opportunity to study an example of their type, first used in 1467 and now recognized as the first truly Roman font. Each chapter of the accompanying book begins with a 9-line initial in blue ink. Book bound in quarter-morocco with marbled paper over boards. Note from publisher laid in.
