Octavo. 124pp. Preface by Elaine Koretsky. Contains forty paper samples of great variety and interest, collected by McClure, a botanist who lived in China from 1919 to 1941. These include brilliant dyed papers for ceremonial use, rough papers with visible grasses, a Chinese lottery ticket, and papers made for specialized uses, such as padding winter garments, lining coffins, making firecrackers or fuses, covering kites and lanterns, and sacrificial "spirit money." Most enigmatic is "cocoon stifling paper," used in the manufacture of silk. Fine in rose paper boards backed in black morocco with orange lettering-piece. Facsimile of a Chinese newspaper from 1932 is laid-in, along with prospectus and previous owner's bookplate. (Bird & Bull Bibliography A42).
