Four volumes, consisting of: Costumes of
Different Nations. 96pp. + 47 copper engraved plates. 1814 edition; London
in Miniature. 96pp. + 47 copper engraved plates. First edition, 1814; Pictures
of English History. Two volumes each containing 96pp. + 48 copper engraved
plates. 1811 edition. Lawrence Darton records an eight-volume set in a larger
bookcase-style box that Darton published in 1812, from which this smaller set
appears to be derived—though the titles in each set differ, and Darton makes no
reference to it in his bibliography. Rare: we can locate only one institutional
holding for a smaller set, which appears to date from around 1818 and has only
one title in common with the present example. Contemporary young owner's dated
ink inscription on front endpaper verso, a touch of wear here and there,
otherwise an extraordinarily preserved set housed in publisher's pine box lined
with pink paper, and with color title label on sliding lid. (cf. Darton
G647[2]; G648[1]; G649; and G652[2]). (Books measure 2 1/2 by 2 3/8 in; 6.3 x 6 cm.
Box measures 3 in. tall by 3 5/8 in. wide by 3 1/8 in. deep; 7.7 x 9.3 x 7.7 cm).
