Giovannitti was an Italian-American union leader and socialist activist, remembered chiefly for his efforts around the 1912 textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts and his eloquent defense during the subsequent trial. A dignified poem, receiving sympathetic publication by Hillacre for distribution shortly after the events described, indicated Giovannitti's continued popular appeal.
