Small quarto. (viii), 55pp. Calligraphic initials hand-drawn by Mark Livingston. The writings of Traherne, an English clergyman, were lost until 1896, and finally published in 1958. The opening sentence, "An empty book is like an infant's soul, in which anything may be written," is printed in red and black, and each of the remaining 99 meditations starts with a five-line calligraphic initial, hand-applied in red, blue, or green. A beautifully printed and decorated book, being one of the major publications of the Press. Publisher's blue boards backed in gilt-stamped vellum. Light toning to spine with some rubbing to gilt, else a near fine copy of a beautiful work.
