16mo. (16), 263, (1)pp. Prefaced by a note from the translator, Thomaz de Aquino Bello e Freitas, and a historical summary to help orient the Portuguese reader to the political situation surrounding Henry IV of France. A frontispiece portrait of the latter appears ahead of the text. Voltaire's epic dramatizes the events around 1589 siege of Paris; in true Voltairean fashion, the narrative swiftly transforms into a critique of religious fanaticism and appropriations of power, delivered in coy lyric. In a contemporary binding of mottled calf over boards with spine in five compartments. Marbled pastedowns and matching marbling to all edges. Collated complete, including half title and ribbon bookmark. Edges modestly rubbed and corners bumped, else very good to near fine and quite scarce. A credit to Voltaire's continued influence even after his death in 1778.
